3 Nov 1953 Alexander Gillis
On Nov. 3, at the home of his cousin, John M. MacEachern, Cape George, there passed peacefully away, Alexander Gillis at the age of ninety years. Born at Mabou, C.B. he was a son of Colin Gillis and Catherine MacNeil (Gillis). The family moved to Margaree Harbour when Alex was a mere boy. Coming to Cape George as a young man Alex lived with the MacEachern family the rest of his life. Hewas noted for his honesty, industrious nature and thrift. During his last illness he received the sacraments many times as he was always a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church. The only one surviving him is a sister Mrs. George MacKenzie, Mabou. The funeral services were at Holy Rosary Church, Ballantynes Cove on Nov. 5. Requiem Mass was celebrated by the pastor Rev. A. Bryden, who was assisted at the graveside by Rev. A.J. MacAdam, a former pastor. Burial was at Holy Rosary cemetery, Ballantyne’s Cove. The Pass Bearers, all cousins of the deceased were: Dan H. MacInnis, Leo Roberts, James Walsh, Harry Bailey, Hugh MacEachern and D.C. MacEachern.
