County Native was 59 Years a Sister – Sister Mary Rita MacGillivray died at the Bethany motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Martha, on September 12.  

She was the former Eunice Martina MacGillivray, daughter of Mr and Mrs John MacGillivray of South Side Cape George.  

Sister Mary Rita made her profession as a Sister of St. Martha  in 1919, and at the time of her death was in the 59th year of her religious life.  As a graduate of St. Martha’s School of Nursing, she served in the various health institutions of the congregation until 1970, when because of failing health she returned to the motherhouse.  She is survived by three sisters, Selina and Margaret of Antigonish, and Sister Mary

Ann, Congregation of Notre Dame, of St. Theresa’s Convent, Sydney.  The funeral Mass was celebrated by Rev. John Barry,  chaplain at Bethany, assisted by Rev. Douglas Murphy. rector of St. Ninian’s Cathedral, and Rev. Lawrence Gillis. The Bethany Choir was supplemented by sisters from the other houses of the

Congregation.  Pallbearers were James  Walsh, Allan Boyd, James Hanrahan, John Vincent MacEachern,

James Delaney and Dan Hugh Macinnis.
