Donald C. Spellman, 69, of 301 No. 30th St., died yesterday in a local hospital. Born in Freeport, Ill., he had lived in Tacoma 67 years. Owner of the Washington Curtain Laundry, Mr. Spellman was widely known in this area in the laundry business and served as president of the Pacific North-west Launderers and Dry Cleaners Association in 1938. He was a graduate of the old Tacoma High School and a classmate and close friend of Frank Beck, the cartoonist, who often used Mr. Spellman, by name or drawing, in his “Bo” strips. The Tacoman was a News Tribune carrier in the early 1900’s. He was a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Tacoma Elks Lodge No. 174, the Fifty Year Club, Tacoma Lodge No. 22, F&AM, and the Scottish Rite. HIs wife, Edith, and a sister Mrs. Muriel Montelius of Minneapolis survive. Private services will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the C.O. Lynn Chapel, with the Tacoma Elks Lodge officiating. Cremation will follow. The family requests that in place of flowers donations be made to the Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital if desired.
