Gillis, Alexander Joseph

Alexander Joseph Gillis, of Morar, Antigonish County, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jacques Belanger of Verdun, Quebec. . HIs age was 71.  Son of the late John A. and Mary (MacInnis) Gillis of Morar, he spent most of his life in that community.  He was a faithful parishioner of St. George’s Church, Georgeville.  Survivors include his widow, six daughters and four sons; Mary (Mrs. John D. Brown), Livingstone’s Cove; Christina (Mrs. Gillis MacEachern), Antigonish; Florence (Mrs. Prescott Smith), Sylvan Valley; Sally (Mrs. Michael Novak), Livingstone’s Cove; Frances (Mrs. Ansel Adams, Gaspe, Quebec; Barbara (Mrs. Belanger); JOhn J. Livingstone’s Cove; Alexander,  Sylvan Valley; Andrew, Toronto and Lawrence at home.  A son predeceased him. Also surviving are a brother, Dr. Andrew Gillis, Baltimore and two sisters, Mary, R.N. in Baltimore and Katie (Mrs. Lewis) of Detroit. Following Requiem Mass in St. George’s Church interment took place in the parish cemetery.  Pallbearers were Prescott Smith, Michael Novak, Gillis MacEachern, John D. Brown, Ansel Adams and Dan C. MacNeil.  The numerous Mass offerings, sympathy cards and flowers received by the bereaved family testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held.
