County Boy Drowns in Newfoundland

Nine year old William Clarke, son of Mr and Mrs J.W. Clarke of Cape George, Antigonish County, was drowned Sunday at Bishop’s Falls, Newfoundland, where he was visiting his grandparents.  According to world received here by Rev. E.V. Forbes, pastor of St. James United Church, the boy and two other youngsters were playing near the river when William boarded a small boat.  The boat moved away from the shore, and the boy jumped out in an apparent effort to wade to the bank, but the water was too deep and his playmates could not save him.  The body was recovered by R.C.M.P. from Grand Falls.  The boy’s father, a Second World War veteran, is a patient in Camp Hill Hospital at Halifax.  Besides his parents, seven brothers and two sisters also survive.
