20 Oct 1945 Joseph R. Gillis
His Many friends were shocked to hear of the tragic death of Joseph Roderick Gillis, son of Mr and Mrs Neil Gillis, Livingstone’s Cove, who was killed in a car accident at Kenzieville on the evening of October 20. He was on his way home from Shubenacadie where he was employed with Chisholm Bros., to spend the weekend with his parents. On his way home he called for his brother Pte. John R., who is stationed at Debert, and stopped again in New Glasgow for his sister Margaret who is attending high school there, with the intention of having a family reunion. His body was brought home Sunday afternoon and the home was thronged until the morning of the funeral by those who came to pay their last respects to a model son and brother. Joe, as he was familiarly known, had his twenty-fourth only a few days before his death. He was of a quiet, gentle and kind disposition, and made friends with all with whom he came in contact . He was employed with Chisholm Bros. for the past number of years and they considered him one of their most trusted workmen. Sober and industrious, his death is a blow to the parish of Georgeville, for it can ill afford to lose young men of his type. The many Mass cards and letters of sympathy bore silent testimony of the lobe and respect held for him. The funeral took place at Georgeville on the morning of October 23, and was one of the largest ever seen in St. George’s church. The funeral Mass was sung by his pastor Rev. Roderick MacPherson, who also officiated at the graveside, assisted by Rev. A.J. MacAdam, Lakevale, and Rev. Dan r. Chisholm, New Glasgow. Besides his parents he leaves to mourn their loss, the brother and sister already mentioned, three sisters; Mary (Mrs. Hugh Chisholm), Ohio; Lenn at Georeville; and Florence at home. The pall bearers were Donald Chisholm, Bernard Chihsholm, Huntley Adams, Hugh MacPherson, Angus MacDougall and Leo MacInnis.
