Consoled by the last rites of the Catholic Church, Colin Francis MacDoanld of Ballantyne’s Cove passed to his eternal reward on Jan. 31. He was 69 years old. Son of the late Captain Angus MacDonald and Margaret (MacNeil) MacDonald, he was born Sept 6, 1890 at Ballantyne’s Cove and lived there all his life. He married Mary Ellen, daughter of Lightkeeper Alex L. MacEachern and Isabel (Gillis) MacEachern of Cape George Point on Nov 28, 1916. Until ill health caused his retirement two years ago, he had carried the mail for almost 30 years from Antigonish to the Cape via the Harbor Road. His son, Gus, is completing his last contract. A kind father, a faithful parishioner and a good neighbor and citizen, his loss will be deeply felt by a host of friends. The hundreds of Mass offerings, letters of sympathy and floral wreaths were a silent tribute to a highly esteemed gentleman. Surviving are his sorrowing widow and eight of their ten children Margaret I. (Mrs. Donald A Chisholm) of Antigonish. Isabel (Mrs. Frank MacNeil) in Ballantyne’s Cove. Florence (Mrs. Allan J. MacDonald ) of Heatherton, Martha (Sister Marie Raymond, C.S.M.) in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay, Mary with the Dept. Of Lands and Forests in Halifax, Augustine, rural mail driver, Bernard with Eastern Co-op Services in Stephenville, Nfld., and Raymond at home. Two children, Martha and Austin died in infancy. Also surviving are two sisters, Harriet (Sister Mary Austin) at Bethany, and Catherine in Brookline, Mass., and a brother, Angus in Heatherton. Besides his parents, two sisters and three brothers predeceased him; Mary (Mrs. James F. MacEachern and Josephine who died in infancy; Jack and Gus were killed in British Columbia and Austin died at home. An adopted sister, Jane, died a year ago. Rev. Bernard Macneil, celebrated Requiem Mass in Holy Rosary Church on Feb 4. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers were Dan J. MacInnis, Leo Roberts, Kimball Falkenham and Hugh MacEachern of Ballantyne’s Cove and James MacDougall and Colin F. MacKinnon of Antigonish.
