MacDonald, Florence “Flo”

28 Feb 1944

Miss Flora MacDonald, known to generations of Antigonish folk as “Flo” Captain Dan”, was found dead in her home on Main Street last Monday evening.  Death had apparently come to her during the afternoon, for there was still a fire in the kitchen stove when she was discovered.  She had been living alone for years, but neighbors always had her in mind, and someone called on her practically every day. Alexander Poirier went to her house Monday after supper and found the place in darkness.  He called to Miss MacDonald several times, and when there was no response he sent for Police Chief Archie MacGillivray.  Entering the house, the party found Miss MacDonald, life apparently extinct, laying on the kitchen floor.  Father Gallivan gave the last rites.  Miss MacDonald was a native of Antigonish, daughter of the late Capt. Dan MacDonald, ship owner, and oldtime merchant.  She became a nurse as a young woman, and practiced her profession here for a long time, retiring about 25 years ago.  She was about 82 years old, and was the last surviving member of her family.  Other members were:  John, Will, Mame, Margaret and Sis.  A niece, Mrs. A.R. Manning  (nee Millie Brown) lives in Montreal. Mrs. Annie Prue, Purl Brook, and Miss Mary MacLellan, Saltsprings, are first cousins.  The remains were waked at the home of Rod. C. MacDonald, undertaker, and the funeral takes place this (Thursday) morning.
