Mother Mary Agnes MacDonald, a member of the Contemplative Order of the Poor Clares, died on April 14 at Mission, British Columbia. She would have been 54 years professed on May 27. Her parents came from Malignant Cove and Ballantyne’s Cove in Antigonish County. Sister MacDonald was the foundation of the Poor Clares in the Archdiocese of Vancouver. On November 21, 1927, the former Gertrude MacDonald entered the Poor Clares Monastery in Victoria B.C. leaving a position that she had held for several years as a bank teller at the Bank of Montreal in New Westminster B.C. Nine years after her entrance she was elected abbess of the monastery in Victoria. She remained there until 19?? When she was chosen as the foundress of the new monastery which Archbishop William M. Duke requested for his archdiocese of Vancouver. Mother Agnes remained abbess while the sisters resided inOur Lady of M??? Parish, later St. Francis de Sales and finally in Mission where the abby moved in 1962. She retired from active work in 1965.
