John J. MacGillivray, well known resident of S.S. Cape George, died at his home last Monday morning shortly after nine o’clock. He was seventy years of age. Mr. MacGillivray had been unwell for a year or so but was able to be around. He was to church Sunday, and in the afternoon visited neighbors. Monday morning he did not arise at his usual hour and it was found that his condition was critical. Father Beaton was called and the last rites of the Church were administered. Death came soon afterwards. Deceased is survived by his wife, nee Hannah Walsh, a son, and four daughters: John A., in the Canadian west; Mrs. Rose Cameron, Somerville; Miss Selina, a nurse in training in New York. ; Rev. Sister St. John, of the staff at Holy Angels Convent, Sydney; Rev. Sister St. Rita, superintendent of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay; and two adopted children, Margaret and Theodore. He also leaves two brothers and three sisters: William in Vancouver; Angus at Lakevale; Miss Catherine MacGillivray in California; Mrs. Eunice Boyd, West Lakevale; Mrs. Christina MacEachern, Antigonish.
At South Side Cape George, May 26, John MacGillivray. His sudden passing was a great shock to the surrounding countryside. A resident of the parish of Lakevale during the greater part of his seventy years of life, Mr. MacGillivray was widely known and most highly esteemed. He was an energetic and successful farmer who took a lively interest in the active affairs of his community. Any movement on foot for the betterment of the district in which he lived met always with his hearty and helpful co-operation. His interest in the district school was particularly keen for his great love of children and concern for their welfare was one of the striking features of Mr. MacGillivray’s character. Of a cheerful, optimistic nature John MacGillivray was ever a welcome guest at a neighbors home, while his sterling honesty and spirit of genuine Highland integrity won and kept for him friends wherever he went. He was a splendid type of Catholic manhood. Distance from church or inclement weather were no obstacles to his ardent faith, and every Sunday of the year saw his kindly face and stalwart form among the worshippers. A devoted husband and an affectionate father Mr. MacGillivray leaves to mourn their loss a sorrowing widow; one son, John, in the west; and four daughters: Sister St. John of Grenada, Sydney; Sister Rita, Superior, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay; Mrs. Allan Cameron, Somerville, Mass; Miss Selina, in training at Mt. St. Vincent Hospital, New York; also three adopted children, Frank Carrigan, now in New York; Teddy and Margaret at home. The funeral of the late Mr. MacGillivray took place on Thursday morning and was largely attended both by the people of Lakevale parish and by friends from Antigonish town.
