April 1960 Mary Harriet MacGillivray (MacDougall)
The sudden death of Mary Harriet, beloved wife of Dan R. MacGillivray, Maryvale, came as a shock to a wide circle of friends. Though not enjoying robust health, she was active up until the day of her death. Deceased was a woman of deep piety and extensive charity. Widely known for their hospitality, her kindly disposition and sparkling wit made her home a uniquely happy place where young and old loved to gather. Born at Georgeville in 1883, she was a daughter of the late Dan A. and Catherine MacDougall and was the last surviving member of a family of six. A devout Catholic she maintained an active interest in all parish affairs and generously supported all parochial functions. She died fortified by the last rites of the church. Besides her sorrowing husband, who she married in 1911, she is survived by seven sons and four daughters; Lawrence, Alexander and John, Maryvale; Donald, George and Aubrey, Toronto; Raymond, New Zealand; Mary (Mrs. Joseph MacDonald), Burlington, Mass.; Catherine (Mrs. Howard MacDougall), Antigonish; Margaret (Mrs. Roderick C. Chisholm, Windsor, N.S.; and Teresa at home. Three children predeceased her in infancy. She is also survived by thirty-six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The largely attended funeral service was held in her parish church at Arisaig, with internment in St. Margaret’s cemetery. Officiating were Rev. REv. Murdock MacKenzie, P.P., assisted by REv. Lawrence Gillis. Pallbearers were Andrew MacDonald, Ronald A. Macdonald, Wilfred MacGillivray, Prescott Smith, Hugh D. MacGillivary, Alexander P. MacDonald.
