Many Attend Funeral of Mrs. Jas. MacGregor
New Glasgow, Dec. 30 – The funeral of the late Mrs. James MacGregor was held from the residence of her grandson, James R. MacGregor, Mitchell street, New Glasgow, and was attended by many friends. The deceased was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1837, and when about seven years of age crossed the Atlantic and made her home at Big Island, Merigomish. She married the late James MacGreogor, and for some years lived at Cape George, Antigonish County, moving to Westville in 1884, where the family resided for many years. And where one of the sons, Duncan MacGregor, Acadia St., still resides. She was predeceased by her husband many years ago, and several children passed away in early life. Those at present surviving are: Hugh in Vancouver; Alexander in Montreal; Duncan in Westville, and Elle Mrs. (Rev.) A. H. Denoon, Toronto. The late Mrs. MacGregor was a woman of wonderfully fine character, possessing a simplicity and charm that made her loved by a large circle of friends. She was essentially a home woman, and it was in the home environment that the finest traits of her character were observed. She loved children and that love was reciprocated, and to the very end she had that youthfulness of heart and mind that endeared her to all who were privileged to know her. A widely travelled woman she took a deep interest in a broad range of subjects and possessed a well stored mind. For the past number of years she lived with her daughter, Mrs. Rev. A.H. Denoon, and made many friends in Saltsprings, Pictou Co., Antigonish, Lethbridge and Toronto, who will learn with deep regret of the passing of this kindly woman. Born in old Edinburgh, and transplanted to this new land, she still retained the Scots love for the mother tongue, and was a keen student of Gaelic, particularly the Bible in that language. Possessing excellent health she enjoyed Christmas, and took a keen delight in the joy and festivity of the day in the family circle. The next morning she complained of not feeling well, and towards evening passed away as if in sleep, gently and without pain, to join the loved ones who had gone before. It was a fitting ending to a beautiful life, but her kindly presence is missed, and her memory will remain as a precious legacy to those who remain behind. A funeral service was held at the home of Rev. Dr. Denoon, Toronto, and the body taken to New Glasgow for interment in the old family lot in Riverside Cemetery. The service here was conducted by Rev. George Farquhar of St. Andrew’s church, assisted by Rev. Dr. H.R. Grant.
