22 Apr 1958 William Angus McDonald
The sudden passing of William Angus McDonald, occurred on April 22, 1958 at the Family residence 4353 Welwyn St., Vancouver B.C. Mr. MacDonald was born in 1881, in Big Marsh, Antigonish County. He was the son of William Angus “Og” McDonald and Mary MacGillivary. As a young man he worked in Antigonish town at Trotter’s Store and also commenced his carpenter apprenticeship with Antigonish contractor John Colin. Later on he went to Boston where he worked at the Carpentry trade. In 1907, he married Florence McDonald from North Grant. Mr. McDonald came to British Columbia in 1909, where he first worked at Penticton, B.C. as a teamster. Arriving in Vancouver, B.C., later on in 1909 he worked at his carpentry trade until 1916, when he moved to Grand Forks, B.C. in the Kootenay Country. Always an active and devoted church worker, he saw the founding of three Vancouver’s oldest Catholic churches; St. Joseph’s at Cedar Cottage, Our Lady of Sorrows at Hastings East and St. Andrew’s at Fraser Ave., South Hill district. From 1916 to 1941 he lived at Grand Forks B.C. where he worked at Construction work. In 1941 he returned to Vancouver B.C. where he worked in the Shipyards, and house construction until his retirement. He was known to all his Antigonish friends as “Billy Og” and was beloved by all who knew him. Mr. MacDonald leaves to mourn his loss, his living wife Florence Jane, three daughters; Sister Mary Ellen of the teaching order of St. Ann of Kamloops B.C., Mrs. E Simpson (Lily) Abbotsford B.C.; Mrs. Gl Connor (Grace) Hamilton, Ont., three sons; John, Grant and Wilfred all of Vancouver, B.C., also five grandchildren. Prayers consisting of; The Rosary, Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the reading of the 23rd Psalm were lead by a close friend of Billy’s Mr. Stanley Livingston at the Roselawn Chapel. Requiem high Mass was celebrated on April 25, 1958 by Father William Blackburne at St. Joseph’s Church Cedar Cottage, Vancouver, B.C. Interment took place at Ocean View Burial park, Burnaby B.C. with Father E. MacIntyre officiating at the graveside. Pallbearers were all life long friends of Mr. McDonald and some are former Antigonish people; Alex McDonald (South River, N.S.), Allen McDonell (Vancouver B.C.), John Hector McDonald (Cape George N.S.) Stanley Livingston (Vancouver B.C.); Colin McDonald (Arisaig N.S.) and Sam Kennedy (Fairmont N.S.)
