Liam Clifford McGann, 20, passed away unexpectedly on September 20, 2026, in a tragic automobile accident in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, doing what he loved: exploring Canada’s majestic beauty while blasting great music from his car’s CD player. Liam was born on July 6, 2006, in Lowell, Massachusetts, to Joseph Clifford McGann III and Kira Martin, and was raised in Chelmsford, MA. He was a dual US and Canadian citizen with deep roots on both Canadian coasts. His mother was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, while Nova Scotia served as a second home to his father’s side of the family. Liam attended Chelmsford Public Schools and Innovation Academy in Tyngsborough before graduating from Nashoba Valley Technical High School’s Culinary Arts program in 2024. After graduation, he moved to British Columbia to continue his education and spend cherished time with the Martin side of his family. Liam dove headfirst into discovering Vancouver Island, initially exploring on foot and completing 50-mile hikes. When he bought his treasured Subaru, it unlocked a whole new sense of freedom. Liam spent hours seeking out hidden places and capturing the beauty of the Island in spectacular photos. After soaking up life on the West Coast, he recently moved to Lanark, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, to the #11 MacDonald farmstead where his grandmother, Frances, was raised. Liam could talk at length about history, pondering how events unfolded and why. Those who knew Liam best described him as an “old soul.” His musical tastes spanned genres and generations. He could often be found in one of his favorite flannel button-down shirts, making even the smallest moments memorable. In a world of texts and quick messages, Liam was one of those rare 20-year-olds who actually preferred a phone call or video chat. He could talk for hours with family and friends, sometimes about everything and sometimes about absolutely nothing. Those conversations are now among the moments his loved ones cherish most. He wanted to know people, understand them, and stay connected, no matter the distance. Liam kept a special circle of friends who meant the world to him. He cared deeply and loved deeply, and he had a way of showing that care through his actions. His loyalty to the people he cared about was one of the qualities that made him so special. Liam is survived by his father, Joseph “Cliff” McGann III, and stepmother, Alexandra “Sasha” Teter, of Chelmsford, MA; his mother, Kira Martin, of Pepperell, MA/Victoria, BC; his sister, Nuala McGann; his grandparents, Bill and Val Martin of Victoria, BC; his grandmother, Frances McGann of Westford, MA/Antigonish, NS; his Aunt Dana Martin Henly (Rob); Uncle Brendan McGann; Uncle Ian McGann; Aunt Katie McGann Barclay (Ryan); cousins, Cameron Henly, Emalee McGann, and Landon Barclay; as well as his cherished extended family and close friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved grandfather, Papa Joe McGann. Liam will be deeply missed and forever remembered by the many people who loved him. A celebration of Liam’s life for family and friends in Massachusetts will be held on a date to be determined. Celebrations of his life for family and friends in British Columbia and Nova Scotia are being planned for the summer of 2027. Further details will be shared when arrangements are finalized.
