Thomas Joseph Welsh, 53, of 337 Luce Road, Williamstown, died Monday morning at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted May 20.  Born in Montclair, N.J., Feb. 23, 1943, he was the son of Norman M. and Katherine (Demoslowski) Welsh.  He attended Glen Ridge, N.J. public schools and graduated from Coldwell New Jersey High School.  He received a B.A. from Rutgers University and held a master’s degree in education with a concentration in English from North Adams State College.  After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force and served two years during the Korean conflict with the 3415th Air Force Hospital.  Mr. Welsh had been director of purchasing fro the Continental Can co. and held a similar position with Bristol-Myers, both in N.J.  He came to Williamstown to become director of purchasing for the former Anken Chemical & Film Corp.  He left to teach in Williamstown Public Schools, where he primarily taught the sixth grade.  He ran The Piano Ship from 1975 to 1980.  While in Mount Tabor, N.J. he was    police commissioner and served on the town’s board of trustees and as board secretary.   Mr. Welsh was a member of Mt. Tabor Methodist Church, the Williamstown Teachers Association, which he served as president, the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the National Education Association.  Besides his wife, the former Carole Edith (Clymer) Welsh, whom he married Aug. 4, 1956, in South Orange, N.J. , he leaves two sons Thomas J. Welsh, Jr. of Watertown and Charles C. Welsh of Madison, Wis.; a sister, Mrs William (Patricia) Storey of Succasunna, N.J. and two brothers, Norman M. Welsh of Caldwell, N.J.  and Joseph A. Welsh of Denville, N.J.  Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 3 at 2:15 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, Williamstown, with the Rev. Robert K. Buckwalter, pastor, officiating.  Following cremation burial will be in Ballantynes Cove, Nova Scotia, at a later date.   There are no calling hours.
